Alexis Tsipras

Alexis Tsipras, fmr. Prime Minister of Greece, Leader of the Opposition and President of Syriza

Alexis Tsipras is former Prime minister of Greece and Leader of the Opposition.

He was born in 1974 and studied Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, from which he later received a graduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning.

He has served as Prime minister of Greece from 2015 to 2019, first elected in January 2015 and then re-elected in September 2015.

Since the elections of July 2019 he is Leader of the Opposition.

In his early years, he was Secretary of the youth wing of the "Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology", from 1999 to 2003.

 In 2008, he was elected party President of the "Coalition of the Left", and then re-elected in June 2010.

He has served as President of SYRIZA since the founding party congress in July 2013.

He was first elected MP and head of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA in 2009. He was re-elected MP in May and June 2012, and served as Leader of the Opposition until the January 2015 national elections.

He has served as Vice President of the "European Left" party (EL) (2012-2015) and was EL`s candidate for President of the European Commission in the 2014 European elections.
